Over 50 Years– United Givers Plan Giving Back

Packanackers celebrated the United Givers Plan (UGP) of Packanack Lake 50th Anniversary in 2010 with remarkable generosity to those in need.  Contributions from members and non-members in the Packanack Lake boundaries increased from $20,100 in the 2008-2009-campaign year to $25,100 in the 2009-2010-campaign year for an increase of 25%.  The the PLAA Packanack Day 5k run resulted in a contribution of $3,100. Together with some miscellaneous income, UGP raised a total of $28,400 for the year.  This is particularly noteworthy when we realize that contributions to non-profits in these difficult economic times are down nationally.

UGP has been a rich tradition and a source of pride to the Packanack Lake community throughout the past 50 years and is an important source of support for many non-profit community organizations in the area.  In this, our 50th year, with many organizations worthy of your donations, the Board has adopted a formal Mission statement in terms of whom we will serve. In all cases, we are focusing locally on the needs of Packanack Lake, Wayne Township and Passaic County.  Our Mission includes:

Support of our Youth                         Comforting the Abused

Feeding the Hungary                          Helping Challenged Adults

Aiding the Addicted                           Healing the Sick

Regarding how much is donated to each organization, the amount is now based on three criteria:

1.     Value of the organization to Society

2.     Financial Need

3.     Localness of the community it serves

Board members visit each agency and rate the organizations on the above criteria.  As in the past, all potential beneficiaries are required to submit mission statements and financial statements each year.

UGP divides the year into the phases.  The first phase is the planning phase from March until August and the second phase is the campaign phase from September until February when the 1800 families who are located within the Packanack boundaries are contacted by letter and asked to help.

If you are able to volunteer some time to assist UGP, we believe you will feel it is worthwhile.  Most work is done on your own schedule. This includes visiting our beneficiaries. Monthly updates to the community are published each month in the Pack-a-News. We also need help in promotion and publicity, sending thank yous, assisting in the main mailing in October as well as the follow ups in November and December, and attending monthly meetings to evaluate new donor requests, review organizational issues but mostly to gain new ideas for promotion since we no longer solicit door to door. Our formal slogan which was adopted this year is:

UGP- Packanack Giving Back

What better use of your free time than helping your neighbors in need.
