Yacht Club
On any given Sunday during many months of the year, you can see the lovely sight of white sails skimming over the surface of Packanack Lake. Sailing is an integral part of any lake community and particularly at Packanack this is especially true. Formed in 1939, the Yacht Club is one of the oldest in our community.
The Packanack Lake Yacht Club offers warm camaraderie and friendly competition. Currently racing at Packanack are two classes of sailboat, the Jet 14 and the Sun Fish. The Jets are sailed by a skipper and a crew of one. The Sunfish is a very speedy, single handed sailboat with one sail – it looks more like a surfboard with rigging. The competitive sailing sessions are divided into two seasons, spring and fall. Following races, the sailors usually gather for happy hour on the back deck of the clubhouse and discuss racing strategy and enjoy the view.
The Yacht Club also sponsors a junior sailing program for children ages 11 – 16, this lively class is taught during the summer months. Once confidence is gained, students begin racing amongst themselves and many move into the Sea Scouts.
Most residents have seen the beautiful sight of a sailboat on Packanack Lake, why not learn how to use the boat's sails. There is a lot to learn - how to maneuver by tacking and gibing, docking and safety. However, if you take it one step at a time, you too can learn to sail.
